Leadership always has a moral dimension and effective leadership – individual or collective – involves creating a consensus around the legitimacy of decisions. This has rarely been more difficult in our professional lives than it is now. Dilemmas abound with the respect to the place of social and racial justice in our institutional agendas; our environmental responsibilities; our investment strategies; the restitution of contested museum holdings; the moral standing of our stakeholders – artists, donors, board members…How does one create the consensus required to lead in these circumstances?
